Hidden away in the secluded, award-winning cobbled courtyard of the historic former Royal Oak, 5* Dray Cottage and 4* Shire holiday cottages, have been created in the Grade 2 Listed former Stables. Both offer surprising tranquility and privacy whilst being 5 minutes away from the railway station, shops, restaurants and pubs. Many guests simply park up in the gated courtyard and stay.

Dray Cottage (sleeping 4) and Shire Cottage (sleeping 6) can be booked as one, providing linked accommodation for 10 with a kitchen large enough for all to sit down together! Favoured by wedding parties, pet owners and walkers and families who all find Knaresborough is the perfect centre for exploring Yorkshire.

Dray Cottage offers easy access to its own ground floor bedroom, with the second floor devoted to one very large and luxurious en-suite bedroom.

The ground floor is all on one level with travertine stone flooring throughout. The main entrance leads into the light and airy spacious lounge/dining room whilst the secondary, easy access entrance, leads to the ground floor super king size en-suite bedroom with zip and link orthopaedic mattresses.  En-suite is the wet room, complete with sauna (for 2 people), walk-in shower, toilet, basin and heated towel rail.

The fully fitted designer kitchen is between this bedroom and the sitting room.  Originally the stable's harness room, it retains the original fireplace and chimney breast.  The super king size loft-style bedroom (zip and linke mattresses) with oak wooden flooring, is accessed from a galleried staircase leading from the lounge.  Fully tiled en-suite has a double-ended bath with hand held shower, basin and toilet.

Please note that a £100 returnable bond is payable to the owner for single-gender bookings.

We stayed as part of a group booking taking over the adjacent Shire Cottage as both have their own lockable/interconnecting door and this also gave us exclusive use of the courtyard and private parking facilities. The cottage has been lovingly refurbished from its original stables layout by the owners to what is a very high and refined standard. Only the best materials and furnishings have been used so it really feels like a luxury home-from-home and is just a 5-minute walk from the compact town centre, should you be coming via train it's also only a 5-minute stroll from the nearby station. There is plenty of private parking (accessed by the covered archway and electric gates) directly off the road junction but as the cottages are set back quite a way (with buildings between) there is no problem with road noise. We had a fantastic double bedroom with large en-suite bathroom and a very comfy king size bed, top quality furnishings throughout and the kitchen has a super-sized fridge/freezer and oven/hob, so its great for a family meal or full English breakfast, with a large dishwasher. The guestbook has many entries, all of which praise the quality and location that is perfect if you want to explore Knaresborough and the surrounding area. In the adjoining cottage there is a hot tub which again is not your run-of-the-mill basic job, it's a luxury full four seater in its own wet-room with private shower facilities - a real bonus after a hard day exploring the town. The owners were very friendly and they made sure we wanted for nothing during our stay (soft/fluffy towels provided in abundance), this really is a top quality cottage in a brilliant location for everything Knaresborough'ish I'd happily recommend either (or both) cottages to anyone looking for that special break in this lovely compact Yorkshire market town.

Dray and Shire Cottages provide excellent, flexible accommodation right in the heart of Knaresborough. Both cottages are exceptionally well equipped with absolutely everything you could ever need. The owners were extremely obliging and were happy to configure the bedrooms exactly as we needed. The cottages are located at the end of the High Street so staying here ensures that shops, pubs, restaurants etc. are literally on the doorstep. I can highly recommend both cottages especially for a large family group.

We had a great week here with our young daughter. The cottage is beautiful, an unusual layout which has been thoughtfully designed and furnished to a very high standard. It is exceptionally comfortable and relaxing with everything you could need and more. The beds are so comfortable and the infrared sauna is an added bonus. There are lots of extras included such as towels, shower gel and shampoo provided, milk and tea / coffee supplies for unpacking, beautiful flowers and a lovely bottle of wine and cake! The owners are very nice people who communicate pleasantly right from booking and are on hand with any questions you have while you're there. Ron, the red setter was an occasional visitor to our cottage, much to our daughters delight! There is secure parking in a lovely courtyard, where you can also sit with a drink and enjoy the sun, if you're lucky enough - we only managed one evening! Knaresborough itself is a lovely place with many good places to eat, drink and visit. York and Harrogate are both around 30 mins away and very easily accessible by public transport. We all thoroughly enjoyed our week here and felt very relaxed (and quite sad) when it came time to leave
