Top 5 things for kids to do in Yorkshire

04 August 2017

High Five! Our top 5 places for the kids to let off steam this summer in Yorkshire!

Kids brimming with energy during the holidays and weekends?  Struggling to keep them occupied?   Harrogate might seem like quite a “grown up” place, but we’ve masses to keep the youngsters occupied (and active!) whether they’re at the toddler or the teenage end of the spectrum!

Check these ideas out – all just a short car ride from Harrogate – so a bit less “are we nearly there yet?” and a bit more “I don’t want to go home”.

Nidderdale Llamas

Nidderdale Llamas gets rave reviews on Tripadvisor with a recent visitor describing it as “one of the best things I have ever done in my life”!  Visitors have been flocking (gettit?) to Kiln Farm In Nidderdale since 2009 coming back ever since!  A whole range of experiences are available – right up to an all day llama trek for the more energetic – so there’s something for everyone.  Llama speed dating ensures you are paired up with your ideal llama –  Chester, Gary and Armani are firm favourites!  Call 01423 711052 or see the website here.

Mother Shipton’s Cave and Petrifying Well

Yorkshire claims Britain’s oldest visitor attraction in Knaresborough where Mother Shipton’s Cave is hewn out of the rock in what was the medieval forest of Knaresborough.  Welcoming visitors since 1630 when it was the home of an infamous prophetess, Mother Shipton foresaw major world events and inventions including cars, trains, telephones, radios, skyscrapers and submarines!  Kids love this spooky mysterious place with acres of space to explore and gasp at the petrifying well where objects are amazingly transformed to stone! Take a look at the website here!

How Stean Gorge

This 300 yard long naturally occurring limestone gorge at the top of Nidderdale has been a destination for thrill seekers for generations!  Now firmly catering for twenty first century tastes, visitors can sign up for gorge walking, caving, canyoning, abseiling and even a high wire Via Ferrata!  The less energetically inclined can simply while away the hours following the gorge path along its twists and turns and bridges, including a 100 yard long tunnel (don’t forget your torch!) – hard hats are included in the entrance fee! Here's all the details!

Stockeld Park

One of the area’s newest and most popular attractions near Wetherby – since first opening its gates in 2013 the Adventure Park has just flown!  Opens during all school holidays (including half term) for indoor and outdoor fun – so the kids are happy come rain or shine! Be sure to allow plenty of time for your visit to make sure you don’t miss anything – choose from Go Karting, Buccaneer Boats, Roller Skating, exploring the Maze and Inflatable Fun.  Watch out for themed events – we especially love spooky Halloween and the Christmas Adventure when the park is transformed into a winter wonderland complete with ice rink, ski trail and a magically lit Enchanted Forest.  Stockeld Park Website here.

Brimham Rocks

One of the original and the best – owned by the National Trust and loved by generations!  Kids of all ages (and adults too!) can let their hair down and imagination run riot among the weird and wonderful naturally eroded rock formations of this spectacular natural play park!  Just a short drive out of Harrogate and set in beautiful Nidderdale, the site covers many acres with numerous spectacular viewpoints and a delightful café with outdoor seating.  Brimham Rocks opening hours here.
