Gilbert & Sullivan Festival 2015 Harrogate
05 March 2015
Harrogate is looking forward to welcoming back the Gilbert & Sullivan Festival this August 1st to 23rd! After the roaring success of its move in 2014 from Buxton, the event is set to go from strength to strength this Summer.
Harrogate Holidays has a great range of town houses and apartments which are just perfect for visitors and performers to the Festival. We can offer accommodation just a stone's throw from the venues for stays from just 2 nights up to 3 weeks (or more) in properties which can accommodate from 2 to 8 guests. And if you are a group of friends who want to stay close by to each other - we can offer adjacent apartments to suit larger groups. Most of our properties have free WiFi and many have free parking and are pet friendly (so you don't need to leave your four legged friends behind). Stay for as little as £20 per person per night. Visit our home page here and use our quick search facility to find your perfect stay.
The Festival was founded in 1994 by Ian Smith and was hosted for 20 years in Buxton before its successful move to Harrogate.
The event attracts a wealth of amateur performing Gilbert & Sullivan Societies from all over the world to compete for the sought after International Champions Prize, whilst there is also a world-class programme of professional performances including those by the resident National Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company at weekends. Visitors can enjoy almost round the clock G&S with nightly, matinee and weekend performances!
The glittering and recently renovated Royal Hall is the principal auditorium, whilst the Harrogate International Centre Auditorium, the town's theatre and various other great venues host professional and amateur shows alike.
A thriving fringe incorporates a wide range of features including recitals, masterclasses and lectures. Visitors can also enjoy a late night after hours festival club and a Gilbert & Sullivan Festival Memorabilia Fair. Of particular interest this year is a special performance of Sir Arthur Sullivan's The Golden Legend at Leeds Town Hall on Friday August 14th - tickets are sure to sell fast, so don't leave it too late to book!
The Festival is hugely popular, attracting enthusiasts and performers from all over the world - ticket sales have topped 25 000 in some years! There is a commitment to maintain the same ticket prices at the Royal Hall this year (£24-£30 for the professional performances and £18-£22 for competition shows on weekday evenings) and there is a fantastic offer for tickets to the opening gala weekend in the HIC on 1st & 2nd Auguswt - just £15 each for the four performances at HIC by the National Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company performing The Gondoliers and HMS Pinafore.
Harrogate has taken the festival very much to its heart and welcomes visitors and performers with open arms. Our accommodation providers, restaurants, cafes and bars are very well suited to meeting the needs of large visiting festivals and the Gilbert and Sullivan festival is no exception.
Here's a taste of HMS Pinafore to whet your appetite.
