Ripon is a culturally rich, historical North Yorkshire market town with its own cathedral. Ripon is 12.5 miles north of Harrogate and a good base for those wishing to explore Nidderdale and the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Ripon Cathedral is nearly 1400 years old with a Saxon Age crypt and medieval woodcarvings that decorate the choir stalls. They are said to have inspired Lewis Carroll in his writing.
Other local attractions include the town’s museums such as the Prison and Police Museum where you can find out exactly what it was like to be an inmate during Victorian times. There’s also a workhouse and courthouse building at the same location. Ripon is a 4-mile drive from the stunning ruins at Fountains Abbey and the grounds of the large Studley Park, with its winding trails and deep valleys. There are good transport links between Ripon and Harrogate for events and functions at the Conference Centre.
